Rhona M. Lichtenwald

I am a lawyer, mediator, legal instructor and presenter.

I obtained a BA (Honours) from Concordia University before locating to the West Coast and graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Laws in 1989. After articling with a full service firm in New Westminster, BC, I launched my legal career in Vancouver as a sole practitioner in divorce & family law, civil litigation, personal injury, wills & real estate law. I have appeared in the BC Supreme Court Family and Civil divisions and in the BC Provincial Court, Family, Small Claims and Criminal divisions.

I was accredited as a Family Law Mediator by the Law Society of BC in 1996. In 1999, I and a small group of family lawyers and mental health professionals established the Collaborative Divorce Association of Vancouver, which spearheaded the Collaborative Family Law movement in BC. I am a passionate advocate for dispute resolution in a dignified, respectful, cost-effective and practical manner.

In 2001, I established a non-litigation practice of collaborative law, mediation and negotiated settlements. I trained lawyers, mental health professionals and financial specialists in collaborative practice through the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC. I created and taught a family law course for the Vancouver School Board's Continuing Education Department. I have provided presentations, trainings and workshops to small and large groups.  I was a guest on the Bill Good Radio Talk Show and presented a contract course to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics Organizing Committee Legal Department.

I was the Supervisory Lawyer to the Battered Women's Support Services Legal Advocate program for 8 years. I trained legal advocates through the Law Foundation of BC and have presented on various family law topics for the Legal Services Society of BC.

In 2004 I began instructing the Law Society of BC's Professional Legal Training Course (the BC Bar admission course for articling students). I taught law students the basics of law practice: law office management, legal ethics, civil litigation, criminal law, family law, creditor's remedies, wills & estates, company, corporate and real estate law. I specialized in updating the family practice, mediation, negotiation, advocacy skills, professional ethics and practice management course materials.

In January 2015, I created Hillcrest Law & Mediation, which is my offering of the very best of my experience and passion as a lawyer, mediator and instructor to the public, the legal profession and to law students. I am pleased to be of service as a mediator, legal consultant or locum, continuing professional development (CPD) presenter and workshop facilitator, legal educator and tutor. Please find more detailed descriptions of my services in the links on this website.

I am an active member of the legal profession and volunteer in my community. On a personal note, I am happily married and am the very proud mother of two young adult daughters. I perform in musical theatre and enjoy walking, cycling and yoga. I love to travel and spend time with good friends. I am also an Okanagan wine enthusiast.

In May, 2018, I am performing in my 7th Lawyer Show production "The Drowsy Chaperone", an annual fundraiser for two local theatre companies, Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre.
